Muzikaal-visuele improvisatie ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’

   ‘Return to present’ is een muzikaal-visuele improvisatie waarbij de ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ live gaat improviseren op beeldmateriaal dat door de Nederlandse kunstenaar Sjon Brands wordt aangeleverd. De band en de kunstenaar hebben elkaar leren kennen tijdens de ‘Bosch-Y-Bosco’-tour door Europa, een cultureel uitwisselingsproject dat de route van de ‘Tuin der Lusten’ van de schilder Jheronimus Bosch volgt. Tijdens deze reis in het kader van Jheronimus-Bosch-500-jaar zijn zij ertoe gekomen elkaar creatief uit te dagen in de geest van de nog steeds tot de verbeelding sprekende schilder. Deze spontane samenwerking vindt zijn belag op de Gentse Feesten van 2016.

   De ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ bestaat uit Martin Fondse (componist/piano), Erwin Vann (gastsolist/saxofoon), Eric van der Westen (contrabas) en Jan Wirken (drums). Het gezelschap volgt dezelfde weg als de hofkapel van de koning van Spanje in de zestiende eeuw met als basismateriaal melodieën en harmonieën van componisten uit de tijd van Jheronimus Bosch (Johannes van Ockeghem / Jacob Obrech). Zonder koning weliswaar, maar wèl met gastsolisten uit iedere stad onderweg. In Gent is hiervoor Erwin Vann, één van de belangrijke stemmen van de Belgische jazzscene, uitgenodigd.

   Sjon Brands maakt dadïstische paradijsvogels en groteske gevleugelde luchtschepen, beelden die regelrecht uit het surrealistisch rariteitenreservaat van Jheronimus Bosch lijken te fladderen. Tijdens de ‘Bosch-Y-Bosco’-tour wordt zijn werk vertoond in musea in Nederland en Spanje. Het beeldmateriaal dat hij voor dit project aanlevert is een collage van bewegende fragmenten van de ‘Tuin der Lusten’ uit het Museo del Prado èn filmbeelden van zijn eigenaardige luchtschepen en vogels. Met deze beelden hoopt de kunstenaar de muzikanten uit te dagen tot nieuwe hoogten in dit bijzondere en oorspronkelijke concert.

   ‘Return to present’ is a musical-visual improvisation in which the ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ will improvise live on footage provided by the Dutch artist Sjon Brands. The band and the artist met during the ‘Bosch-Y-Bosco’ tour through Europe, a cultural exchange project that follows the route of the painter Hieronymus Bosch's ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’. During this journey in the context of Hieronymus Bosch's 500th anniversary, they came to challenge each other creatively in the spirit of the painter who still appeals to the imagination. This spontaneous collaboration takes place at the Ghent Festivities of 2016.

The ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ consists of Martin Fondse (composer/piano), Erwin Vann (guest soloist/saxophone), Eric van der Westen (double bass) and Jan Wirken (drums). The company follows the same path as the court chapel of the King of Spain in the sixteenth century, using melodies and harmonies by composers from the time of Hieronymus Bosch (Johannes van Ockeghem / Jacob Obrech) as basic material. Without a king, but with guest soloists from every city along the way. Erwin Vann, one of the important voices of the Belgian jazz scene, has been invited to Ghent.

Sjon Brands creates dadistic birds of paradise and grotesque winged airships, images that seem to flutter straight out of Hieronymus Bosch's surreal reserve of curiosities. During the ‘Bosch-Y-Bosco’ tour his work is shown in museums in the Netherlands and Spain. The visual material he provides for this project is a collage of moving fragments of the ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ from the Museo del Prado and film images of his peculiar airships and birds. With these images, the artist hopes to challenge the musicians to new heights in this special and original concert.
